Frontend Development

Have a design that you need coded? Look no further.

We hand-code clean, semantic markup, pair it with elegant, efficient stylesheets, and layer on unobtrusive Javascript. We use HTML5 and CSS 2.1 + 3 for all new projects. We have a deep understanding of cross-browser compatibility issues, with the scars to prove it. We believe in the principles of progressive enhancement.

Scripting-wise, we are fans of the jQuery library, but recognize that sometimes plain ol’ Javascript will suffice. Whenever scripting behavior, we keep accessibility in mind, ensuring that essential page functions work even with Javascript off.

We’re also performance freaks. Our standard practice is to sprite images, optimize images, configure Apache via .htaccess to gzip plaintext components and strip ETags, set far-future headers with appropriate versioning and cache-busting, make all CSS and Javascript external, and more. In short: your pages will load fast.

Frontend Code Auditing

Legacy code getting you down? We love cleaning crufty markup and slimming down CSS. Next time you’re tempted to throw out the whole thing and start from scratch, talk to us first - not only will we leave your frontend codebase in much better shape, we’ll help you set up systems and workflows to keep your markup, styles, and scripts squeaky-clean.

CMS Integration & Consulting

If your site doesn’t have a content management system yet, we can evaluate your needs and recommend a CMS to you. We have extensive experience implementing and customizing Wordpress, Textpattern, and ExpressionEngine, but we’re not zealots about these systems or any others—what we recommend will be the right choice for your content and your in-house capacity.

Of course, we’re big fans of ExpressionEngine for content-heavy sites. (We even run a local Meetup group for EE users.) Talk to us if you’re thinking of implementing ExpressionEngine, or need a hand migrating an existing site to EE. We’d love to help.
